National champion Arizona topped the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association Simulated Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) of the 2006 season, the association announced Tuesday. Mathematician Warren Nolan compiles the weekly ratings during the season.

The Wildcats topped the final rankings ahead of UCLA. The Bruins were knocked out in the national semifinal by Northwestern, who came in seventh in the ratings.

Two other Pac-10 teams joined Arizona and UCLA in the top 10, as Arizona State came in fifth and Oregon State ninth. Michigan followed immediately behind fellow Big Ten member Northwestern in eighth place in the final rankings. Three SEC squads finished the year in the top 10, with Alabama placing fourth followed by Tennessee in sixth and Georgia at No. 10. Texas rounded out the teams in the top 10 as the Longhorns closed a record-setting campaign at No. 3.

The Pac-10 finished the year atop the conference RPI, maintaining the top position all season. The SEC followed in second, with the ACC coming in third. The Big 12 and Big Ten rounded out the top five conferences in fourth and fifth, respectively.

As in the RPI rankings, Arizona edged out UCLA for the top spot in the strength of schedule ratings. The Pac-10 dominated the top six places, with Oregon, Arizona State, Washington and Oregon State claiming Nos. 3-6. Michigan and Northwestern had the seventh and eighth toughest schedules, respectively, while SEC Western Division foes Arkansas and Alabama came in at Nos. 9 and 10.
