Marzan Finds Perfection

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Marissa Marzan picked up the win in all three games of the Titans’ sweep of Pacific. In Sunday’s series finale, she completed the perfect weekend with, what else, but her first career perfect game.

Marzan earned Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades after becoming the seventh Fullerton player, and first since Jodie Cox in 2001, to hurl the gem.

In addition to closing the series with the perfect game, she opened the three-game set with a four-hit complete game shutout. For the week she hurled 14 and two-thirds innings, allowing jusr one unearned run while striking out seven and walking three.

Conway Making Division III history
St. Thomas all-America catcher Nikki Conway has the Tommies on top of the Division III ranks with her stellar offensive production.

The senior recently added to her record-laden career as she became just the second player in Division III history to reach 200 hits, 200 runs and 40 home runs for her career. She has been a catalyst in St. Thomas’ current 26-game win streak.

Ragin’ Cajun Still On Fire
Last week we updated Louisiana-Lafayette slugger Danyele Gomez’s attempt to break the all-time career home run list in Division I.

After tying the season mark two weeks ago, Gomez added two more last week to move into the top spot on the 2006 season home run list. She also inched closer to fourth place on the career list, as she now sits two homers shy of former Washington slugger Kristen Rivera.

Gomez has 77 round-trippers in 234 games, while Rivera hit 79 over a span of 244 contests. To put Gomez’s accomplishments in perspective, career leader Stacey Nuveman hit 90 home runs in 264 games. Gomez trails the all-time mark by just 13 round-trippers, and she has played in 30 fewer games than Nuveman did during her tenure at UCLA.

Bombing the Competition
Ithaca pitcher Carly Myers earned Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week accolades after tossing a shutout against RIT to help Ithaca, who enters the postseason aiming for a second straight trip to the Division III national tournament, finish conference play with a perfect 12-0 mark.

Ranked second in the NFCA Division III Top 25, the Bombers’ perfect conference finish marked the first time a team has posted a flawless run through the Empire 8 regular season.

Beavers Cut Another Notch in Record Book
Behind a strong showing from Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week Cambria Miranda, Oregon State claimed the only 3-0 mark in the Pac-10 last week.

The Beavers registered a school-best record through 40 games, and it also knocked off top-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles for the first time since 1999. OSU also knocked off Washington in Seattle for the first time in the program’s annals.

Shippensburg’s Tiesi Reaches Milestone
Shippensburg senior pitcher Kelly Tiesi became just the seventh player in Division II history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts as she helped the Raiders to a doubleheader split of Mansfield on Apr. 25.

She sits seventh on the all-time Division II list, just 18 behind Lindsey Graham of North Dakota State who notched 1,019 from 2001-04.

Canney Takes Place in Record Books
Northwestern junior pitcher Eileen Canney tied the NCAA Division I single-game strikeout record as she fanned 28 in an 18-inning victory over Minnesota Sunday.

The game tied for the second-longest affair in Northwestern history as finished 20 minutes under the five-hour mark.
