St. Joseph’s College junior pitcher Jennifer Martinez matched six other pitchers in Division III history with 20 strikeouts in one game, but that mark didn’t last long.
Eight days later Martinez broke the record she tied, sitting down 21 on strikes to move into the top spot in the NCAA Division III record books.
Sagartz Adds Another School Record to ResumÃ©
Washington University in St. Louis standout Laurel Sagartz added another school record to her list of impressive accomplishments.
The junior from Albuquerque, N.M., went 5-for-7 with 12 RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Greenville College. Se went a perfect 4-for-4 in game two, setting a school record with three home runs and nine RBIs in a 16-2 win.
The three round-trippers tied her for the second most in Division III history, while her two blasts in the third inning made her the third player in Division III annals, and the first in school history, to hit two home runs in the same inning.
Gomez Powers Way to Top
Louisiana-Lafayette’s Danielle Gomez continues to hit the long ball and has moved her way to the top of the season’s home run list.
As of Wednesday, Gomez had hit 22 round-trippers to tie for the NCAA lead on the season with Maryland-Baltimore County’s Melanie Denischuk.
Gomez ranks sixth on the all-time chart with 75 career blasts. She sits 15 behind the all-time mark of 90 set by Stacey Nuveman with 11 games remaining in the regular season.
Playing Under the Lights
William Penn University has been playing softball for over 30 years, but the program made tremendous strides April 19, playing its first night home game.
William Penn split a doubleheader with Iowa Wesleyan in its first game under its newly-installed permanent lights. The school had portable lights brought in for the Midwest Classic Conference tournament, but they were never used.
Can't Catch Haycraft
Union University (Tenn.) standout Holly Haycraft is tough to catch on the bases, and she proved that on April 18 when she stole career base number 170, making her the top base stealer in NAIA history.
The Dyersburg, Tenn., native has 170 career steals in 185 attempts. She holds the school records for stolen bases in a season (55) and a single game (five). The 55 steals ranks as the fourth-best season total in NAIA annals.
Burkhart Etches Name in Record Books… Again
A couple of weeks ago, Arizona State’s Katie Burkhart etched her name in the NCAA record books with 23 strikeouts against Washington that hail as the sixth-best in a single game.
She almost matched the feat April 14, striking out 22 in a 4-2, 10-inning victory for the Sun Devils over Pac-10 rival Arizona.
Brown Keeps Winning
Megan Brown of Florida Southern was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Player of the Week this past week for her efforts against Saint Leo.
She followed that up Monday with a 2-1 win over Valdosta State, giving her a school-record 82 career wins in the circle. The mark also stands as a new record in the Sunshine State Conference.
Erb Shuts Opponents Down
Lock Haven freshman Kristin Erb has been a big key in the Eagles’ 24-game win streak.
The Reading, Pa., native registered her school record-tying 10th shutout of the season and tied the season record for wins with 19 victories.
On the season, the rookie is 19-0 with a national-best 0.16 ERA.
