Osterman Sets New Big 12 Strikeout Record

New Big 12 Strikeout Record
In just over two seasons at Texas, Cat Osterman has become the Big 12’s all-time strikeout leader. In the third inning of Wednesday’s game against Texas-Arlington, Osterman notched her 1,152nd career strikeout, surpassing former Oklahoma State pitcher Lauren Bay’s record set in 2003. Osterman sits in 12th place on the NCAA’s all-time career strikeout charts. Southern Mississippi’s Courtney Blades holds the record with 1773, set during the 2000 season.

Southern Registers WAC First
Fresno State’s Jamie Southern became the first player to be named both the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week performance after her MVP effort at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Southern went 2-1 with a 0.00 ERA and hit .500 at the plate, including four home runs and seven RBIs for the Bulldogs. Southern also swept both National Player of the Week honors.

Irony On the Road
At the NFCA Leadoff Classic, Cal State Northridge’s team bus had problems getting to the field on the final day of competition. North Carolina passed the Matadors’ bus on the road to the South Commons complex, and picked up the CSUN team to take them to their 9 a.m. game, which was against North Carolina.

Not Bad For a Freshman
Samford freshman Meghan Wagner had a good weekend at the Mercer tournament. She hit a grand slam against Marist in the Bulldogs’ opening game of the tournament. Later, she hit another grand slam – a walk off in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Mississippi Valley State. On the weekend, Wagner hit .571 with two home runs and eight RBIs.

100 Win Club
Louisiana-Lafayette pitcher Brooke Mitchell recently became the 39th member of the 100 career win club. Courtney Blades also holds this record, at 151. Four players are within striking distance of entering this exclusive club this season. Jamie Southern entered the week with 93 wins. Georgia Tech’s Jessica Sallinger and Arizona’s Alicia Hollowell both have 81 career victories and Cat Osterman has 68.

Veroni To Retire
NFCA Hall of Famer and Western Illinois head coach Kathy Veroni is set to retire at the end of the 2005 season. Veroni has won nearly 850 games at WIU, leading the Westerwinds to 26 winning seasons during her tenure. As head coach for Western Illinois softball, field hockey and the Macomb Magic, a summer league team from 1979-85, Veroni has coached approximately 2,200 games.
