Fernandez Paces Team USA To 5-0 Win Over NPF East All-Stars

Lisa Fernandez tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout as the USA Olympic Team used a five-run fourth inning to defeat a tough NPF East All-Stars squad before 4,700 at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Fernandez also delivered a key hit to start the rally in the fourth. After Natasha Watley and Leah O’Brien-Amico led off the inning with singles, Fernandez doubled to left field to score the game’s first two runs.

Stacey Nuveman followed Fernandez’ double with a gapper that scored Jaime Clark, who pinch ran for Fernandez. Jessica Mendoza’s triple down the right field line scored a pair of runs to cap off the inning.

The big inning followed a huge threat from the NPF East All-Star team in the third. Brandi Stuart and Lyndsey Klein collected hits and Fernandez was forced to walk Kellie Wilkerson with two outs. Stuart was thrown out at home on Nicole Trimboli’s grounder to Fernandez.

Team USA threatened again in the fifth, but Nuveman hit a sharp liner to left field that stranded two runners.

The win was Team USA’s 163rd consecutive non-Olympic win.
