NFCA Leadoff Classic, First Day Wrap-up

Seven teams are 2-0 after Friday's pool play...Fresno State and South Carolina, 2-0 in Pool 1, meet for the championship of that pool today at 12:30 p.m....Washington, Oklahoma State, USL, DePaul and Oklahoma lead their pools with 2-0 marks.

...Washington Coach Teresa Wilson earned her 500th career college coaching win yesterday with a 2-0 win over Missouri...The win was especially meaningful for Wilson as it came against her alma mater and against the man who coached her there, current Tiger mentor Jay Miller...Wilson (501-276 in her 15th year of college coaching) is approaching another milestone...She needs three more wins to give her 300 as Washington's head coach...Wilson is 297-115 in her eighth year as head coach of the Huskies.

...Of Leadoff Classic players with eight or more at bats, Central Michigan center fielder Elizabeth "Eli" Barnes leads in batting (.750, six-for-eight),doubles (four) and runs batted in (five).

...Nebraska shortstop Jennifer Lizama leads in home runs with two, one in each of Nebraska's
games...Lizama's solo homer was the only Husker run in a 1-0 NU win over Florida State...Her other solo homer was also Nebraska's only run in a 4-1 loss to DePaul.

...Massachussets pitcher Danielle Henderson struck out a tournament-high 17 batters and gave up only one hit in a 2-0 UMass win over Nicholls State.

...Washington's Jamie Graves is the only Leadoff Classic pitcher with a 2-0 record so far...Graves hurled a complete game three-hit shutout vs. Missouri and came on in relief to get the win in UW's 4-2 win over LSU.

...Defending Women's College World Series champion Fresno State's two pool wins didn't come easily...The Bulldogs won both of their games in their final at bat...a solo home run by left fielder Amanda Scott in the bottom of the sixth gave FSU a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Boston College and a two-out, seventh-inning RBI single by centerfielder Becky Witt was the difference in Fresno's 1-0 wn over Southern Illinois...Scott moved from the outfield to the pitcher's circle against SIU and hurled a one-hit shutout.

...Southern Illinois pitcher Carisa Winters has turned some heads at the Leadoff Classicwith her unique and unorthodox pitching style...The junior lefthander literally skips from the dugout to the mound, jumps up and downbetween pitches, and throws the ball into her glove as she walks inside the pitcher's circle...Winters held top-ranked Fresno State scoreless for six and two-thirds innings before Becky Witt's RBI single won the game for FSU.
