1999 NFCA Leadoff Classic - Second Day Wrap-up 02/28/99

In what is becoming a weekend of coaching milestones, Southern Illnois University Coach Kay Brechtelsbauer posted her 600th career victory when the Salukis edged Boston College 2-1 in the final game of Saturday's pool play. Brechtelsbauer, who ranked 16th among active NCAA Division I coaches in wins entering the 1999 season, is now 600-423-3 in her 32nd season, all at SIU...Washington's Teresa Wilson, who reached the 500-win mark on Friday, needs one more win to notch her 300th victory as the head coach at Washington...


Wilson, whose team swept its pool with a 3-0 record and won its opening-round Gold Championship bracket game, 5-2 over Pac 10 rival Stanford, is 299-115 in her eighth season at UW...she is 504-276 in her 14th season as a Division I head coach...


Washington will be joined by DePaul, USL and Oklahoma in today's Gold Championship bracket semifinals...in four years of Leadoff Classic participation, Washington has won more tournament games (19) than any other team...The Huskies are 19-3 in tournament play and are in the Gold Bracket championship semifinals for the fourth straight year...they won the first Leadoff Classic title in 1996, finished second in the Gold Bracket championship in '97 and third last year

...DePaul's performance has been the talk of the tournament...The Blue Demons posted come-from- behind wins over Nebraska and Florida State in winning its pool with a 3-0 record and knocked off defending Gold Championship runner-up Oklahoma State, 6-1 in the first round of Gold Championship bracket play on Saturday.

...DePaul, 1-4 last year in its only previous Leadoff Classic appearance, plays Washington at 11:30 a.m. EST in one Gold Championship bracket semifinal today, while USL and Oklahoma clash in the other at the same time

...South Carolina handed defending Women's College World Series champion and current No. 1-ranked Fresno State its first defeat of the season in the final game of pool play Saturday, 1-0...Joyce McMillin's fourth-inning RBI single scored Leanna Troesch with the game's only run and pitcher Megan Matthews held the Bulldogs to two hits, both singles

...Fresno State quickly recovered, beating Southern Illinois 4-0 in the first round of Silver Championship Bracket play...Fresno plays Missouri and Michigan takes on Arizona State in today's semifinal round of Silver Championship bracket play...Michigan is the defending Leadoff Classic champion


...Central Michigan, Northeast Louisiana, Nebraska and Massachusetts are in the semifinals of the Bronze Championship bracket...Nicholls State had been shut out in its first two pool games and trailed Michigan State 3-0 in the fifth inning of its third pool contest, but the Lady Colonels bats suddenly came to life in the fifth, as NSU scored five runs and beat the Spartans, 5-3...Championship and consolation championshp games in Gold, Silver and Bronze brackets will all be played at 2 p.m. EST this afternoon.
