Demling Hurls Wheaton to 1-0 Win

SALEM, Va. — A first-inning sacrifice fly is all that Wheaton needed as Jackie Demling hurled a complete-game shutout to eliminate Cortland State 1-0 in Saturday’s action at the NCAA Division IIII National Championship.

Wheaton (33-11-1) got the offense started in the top half of the first as Carmella Ranieri reached on an error and eventually scored on a Sarah Malloy sacrifice fly to left.

After the shaky start, Stephanie Adamshick settled down and only allowed one more hit the rest of the way. She struck out five in six innings in the losing effort.

Brittany Ames and Amanda Dow-Allen accounted for the only hits for Wheaton, while Pip Colombo led six Red Dragons (38-8) with a hit apiece as she singled in the sixth to pick up her 200th career hit.

Wheaton advances to face the loser of Saturday’s contest between Salisbury and Moravian.
