1999 NFCA Leadoff Classic, Day 3 Wrapup

NFCA LEADOFF CLASSIC: DAY THREE NOTES

MOST VALUABLE PERFORMANCE: Southwestern Louisiana pitcher Melissa Coronado was named Most Valuable Player of the 1999 NFCA Leadoff Classic. Coronado posted a 3-0 record and allowed only one run in 18 innings pitched. She tossed a one-hitter in the Lady Cajuns' 1-0 quarterfinal victory over South Carolina. After giving up a run to DePaul in the first inning of the championship game, Coronado scattered five hits and pitched five scoreless innings before giving way to Kim Dunlap in the seventh as USL defeated the Blue Demons 2-1.

NO-HITTER SUNDAY: Day three of the 1999 NFCA Leadoff Classic saw two no-hitters, including the first perfect game in the four-year history of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Marcy Crouch of Stanford retired all 15 batters she faced in the Cardinal's 8-0 victory over South Carolina in the consolation championship game of the Gold Bracket. Earlier in the day, Diana DiGilio and Jen Smith combined on a no-hitter to lead Hofstra to a 3-0 win over Nicholls State.

There was a total of three no-hitters in this year's Leadoff Classic. Friday, Washington's Jennifer Spediacci and Jamie Graves combined for a no-hitter as the Huskies defeated L.S.U. 4-2.

CLOSE GAMES: Of the 66 games in this year's Leadoff Classic, 30 games were decided by two runs or less, including 22 one-run games. Seven games in the classic went into extra innings.

FSU/CSU MARATHONS: Florida State and Colorado State faced each other twice in this year's Leadoff Classic, with both games reaching double-figures in innings played. Friday, Florida State outlasted Colorado State 3-2 in 11 innings. Sunday in the Silver Bracket Consolation Semifinals, Colorado State scored four runs in the fifth inning to rally from an early 4-0 deficit, then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-4 victory.

STRIKEOUT MACHINE: Massachusetts pitcher Danielle Henderson averaged nearly two strikeouts per inning in the 1999 NFCA Leadoff Classic, recording 75 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. Henderson struck out 14 batters in the Minutewomen's 2-1 victory over Central Michigan in the championship game of the Bronze Bracket. Henderson posted a 4-1 record in the classic.
