Emporia Takes It
Emporia State won the 2004 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic last weekend in Irving, Texas. The Hornets defeated defending Leadoff champion Texas A&M-Kingsville behind Melissa Stevens' second two-hit shutout of the day. Stevens was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Two Down, One to Go
With both the Division I and Division II Leadoff Classics in the books, Division III takes center stage this weekend. National powers Central, Muskingum and Pacific Lutheran highlight a field of 24 teams. The tournament will be played at Shuford Fields in LaGrange, Ga., with updates via www.nfca.org

Three in a Row
Leigh Ann Ellis became the third player in as many weeks to sweep both the USA Softball and Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week awards. The South Florida pitcher went 4-0 last week to lead the Bulls to the title at the Speedline Invitational. Before this season, only Cat Osterman had swept both honors, doing so the week of April 11, 2003.

Speaking of Cat
Osterman is touring the country with the USA Olympic Team as part of its "Aiming For Athens" tour. Osterman, the only collegian on Team USA's roster, returned home this week to capture her sixth victory of the tour with a 21-0 win over Texas.

Three for Alicia
Arizona sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell earned her third consecutive Pac 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week award. This was the eighth of her young career. Last week, Hollowell struck out 20 batters in a perfect game against Indiana. Hollowell's 20 broke former Wildcat hurler Jennie Finch's regulation game strikeout record of 19, set in 2002.
