Bracket Play Begins At NFCA/Schutt Sports Leadoff Classic

Abilene Christian, St. Mary's, Emporia State, Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Kingsville each claimed pool championships at the 2004 NFCA/Schutt Sports Leadoff Classic in Irving, Texas.

Three wildcard teams -- Midwestern State, Western New Mexico and Incarnate Word join the pool winners in the Gold bracket and compete for the Leadoff Classic championship.

Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated St. Mary's 2-1 in last year's championship game, and could meet each other again in Sunday's semifinal. The Javelinas face Midwestern State in the first round, while St. Mary's plays Western New Mexico.

Texas Woman's, the top-seed in the bracket based on pool play results, faces Incarnate Word in the first round Saturday night. Emporia State and Abilene Christian faceoff in the other Gold quarterfinal.

Central Oklahoma finished 2-1 in pool play and earned the top seed in the Silver bracket. The Bronchos face in-state rival Panhandle State on Saturday, while St. Edward's takes on New Mexico Highlands, which upset Southeastern Oklahoma 2-1 in 8 innings earlier Saturday.

The Lady Savages earned the No. 2 seed in the Silver bracket, and face eighth-ranked Wayne State. The Warriors defeated Abilene Christian 3-1 to earn their first win of the tournament. Cameron and Central Missouri square off in the other Silver bracket quarterfinal.

The Bronze bracket is a three-team round-robin between 13th-ranked Angelo State, Washburn and Eastern New Mexico.
