LSU Wins 2004 NFCA Leadoff Classic

Lauren Castle went 2-for-4 and Kristin Schmidt struck out 10 batters in a complete game performance to lead 12th-ranked LSU to a 4-3 victory over No. 11 Florida State in the championship game of the 2004 Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.

Schmidt was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after posting four wins and four complete games. The senior from Houston, Texas helped lead the Tigers to three wins over four teams ranked among the nation’s top 11, including third-ranked California, No. 4 Washington, No. 6 Georgia and Florida State.

Florida State got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Carly Brieske singled in Beth Wade. LSU answered in the top of the third when Lauren Castle singled to score Camille Harris. Castle later scored on a Leslie Klein single to take a 2-1 lead.

LSU extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth on a Julie Wiese home run, but the Seminoles answered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the frame.

Each team plated one in the fifth to close out the scoring. Castle picked up her second RBI of the game with a double down the left field line that scored Harris. FSU took advantage of an LSU error to cut the lead to the final margin.
