2003 Speedline/NFCA Division III Coaching Staff of the Year

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Central College coach George Wares and assistants Sam Vande Weerd, Teresa Thompson and Marcy Roff have been named the 2003 Speedline/NFCA Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year.

This past season Wares and his staff guided the Pella, Iowa,-based school to a 41-5-1 record and its fourth national title as the Dutch rallied from the losersÕ bracket to claim back-to-back wins over Salisbury (Md.). Central went 9-1 in postseason play after taking the Iowa Conference championship with a 14-2-1 record that included a perfect 3-0 regional mark.

In his 19 seasons guiding the Dutch, Wares has compiled a 657-211-3 mark, the most victories among active Division III coaches. He also tops the active coaches list for NCAA tournament victories (74) and NCAA tournament appearances (18).

The Central College staff was selected by its peers as the Speedline Division III Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year and was then placed on the national coaching staff of the year ballot. They will be recognized as the 2003 Speedline/NFCA Division III Coaching Staff of the Year at the NFCA National Convention in Houston, Texas, in December.
