SALEM, Ore. -- Susan Churchwell went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI and Amy Rosson pitched a four hit shutout to lead UC Davis to a 7-0 victory over Georgia College and State University and its first ever softball national championship here at the 2003 Division II Softball Championships at the Wallace Sports Complex.

Churchwell capped off a day where she went 7-for-7 with seven RBIs and three home runs. UC Davis defeated St. Mary's earlier in the day. Churchwell, an NFCA All-American, was named the tournament's most valuable player.

"I have never had a day like this," said Churchwell. "Everything else pales in comparison because of the magnitude. It just hasn't sunk in. This is great."

UC Davis got on the board with a two run homer from Churchwell in the third. The Aggies added a pair in the fourth when Lindsey Roark hit a triple and was scored on an infield single by Kacy Sevier. Churchwell scored Sevier later in the inning with a line drive single to center field.

Churchwell took the first pitch of the seventh inning and drove it to left field for her second homer of the game. Lindsay Moore hit a two run shot off of GC&SU reliever Brook Harrison.

For UC Davis, the title came in its last season as a Division II team. The Aggies will move to a provisional Division I status in the 2004 season. Coach Kathy DeYoung won her first national title in 25 years as head coach at Davis.

"There are no words to describe this," DeYoung said. "I am just so excited. This is a dream come true. These players have worked so hard all year and they deserve this."

For GC&SU, it marks the end of a great season. The Bobcats made their first appearance in a regional this season, and rode it to a national runner-up finish.

Amy Rosson (29-8) picked up the win for Davis while Jennifer Joiner (27-6) took the loss for GC&SU. Both pitchers were named to the all tournament team.
