NCAA Division II Championships-Game Eight
SALEM, Ore. -- Jennifer Joiner was dominant, stretching her scoreless innings streak to 41 innings while striking out 12 as Georgia College and State University moved within one win of the championship game with a 1-0 victory over Shippensburg at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
"She is the best Division II pitcher I have ever seen," said a confident Shippensburg head coach Bob Brookens. "In fact, she isn't a Division II pitcher. She is right up there in the upper echelon with (Cat) Osterman. She has lots of speed and movement and a great riseball."
In two tournament games, the senior has allowed four hits and struck out 21 batters. She has not issued a walk in two complete games.
"I was on tonight," said Joiner (26-4), who is likely to lead her team against UC Davis Saturday at 6 p.m. PDT.
Shippensburg drops to the loser's bracket to face defending national champion St. Mary's at 2:30.
"We'll be fine," said Brookens. "We played last week on very little rest because of the weather. We're just excited to be here and still playing."
The game's only run came in the top of the sixth inning, when Mandi Jones singled in Kristin Hughes with two outs.
Nicole Brunt (12-6) was a hard-luck loser for the Raiders. She gave up just five hits and struck out nine in a complete game.
