Kingsville wins Leadoff: Texas A&M Kingsville capped off a perfect 6-0 mark at the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic this past weekend by defeating defending national champion St. Mary’s for the title. Pitcher Robyn Jensen was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Gold Bracket after nothing a 2-0 record in bracket play for the Javelinas.
A Milestone in Irving: Texas Woman’s University head coach Dianne Baker won her 700th collegiate game in the consolation final of the Silver Bracket. The Pioneers downed Oklahoma Panhandle State 3-0.
Just down the road in Austin: Cat Osterman struck out 18 batters as fifth-ranked Texas defeated Florida on March 1.
Not to be outdone: The Longhorns’ Amy Bradford struck out 13 and threw a no-hitter against North Carolina on Feb. 28.
No hitter after No hitter: Some teams are lucky to experience a no hitter once every coupkle le of seasons. Considering that, Columbus State (GA) had a couple of pretty good days last week. On Tuesday, Amanda Burson tossed a no-hitter for the Cougars in a 22-0 win over Tuskegee. On Wednesday, she three another one in an 8-0 victory over Division I Morris Brown. If that’s not amazing enough, her teammate Amy Krause threw a perfect game against MBC in the second game of the doubleheader.
Goerl’s Got It: UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl threw three one-hit shutouts last week against Missouri and a two-hit shutout against UC Santa Barbara. Goerl now has nine one-hitters on the season to go with her 0.21 ERA and 15-1 record.
She’s There When It Counts: Mississippi State junior Iyhia McMichael found herself in three clutch situations last week, and delivered in all three. Against No. 15 Florida State, McMichael hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 victory. Against Pittsburgh, McMichael delivered her second home run in as many days, this time tying the game in the seventh to send the game into extra innings and allow MSU to win. Against Syracuse, the junior scored the gamewinning run in the bottom of the seventh. McMichael is leading the Bulldogs, who are currently on a 10-game winning streak, in batting average (.458), triples (3), home runs (5) and RBI (25).
A big weekend: Buffalo sophomore Stacey Evans threw three complete games in the Florida International tournament to help the Bulls to a share of the tournament crown. Evans went 3-0 and only gave up one earned run (0.33 ERA), The right-hander struck out 26 batters including a school record 11 in Buffalo’s 8-2 win over Tennessee.
