Gary Haning Steps Down as Junior National Team Assistant Coach

Gary Haning resigned as assistant coach for the USA Softball Junior Women's National Team, it was announced by USA Softball. Haning and Mike Gonzales were named as assistants following a tryout camp at Chula Vista, Calif., in early October. Pam Newton is head coach of the Junior National Team.

Haning is head coach of the Orange County Batbusters (Calif.) and he says he wants to devote his time to the team.

"After some reflection, I feel it is best for me personally to step down as an assistant coach of the Junior Women's National Team," Haning said in a statement released by USA Softball. "I want to thank USA Softball for the opportunity to work with the team at the team camp and I wish Pam (Newton) and Mike (Gonzalez) and the team the best. I have an inexperienced team that needs development and I will concentrate on that task."

A search for a replacement will begin immediately.

The Junior Women's National Team will train together December 7-12, then leave for Sonora, Mexico to compete in the First Pan American Junior Women's Softball Championship December 13-21. The top five teams from the Pan American championship will earn berths in the 2003 ISF Junior Women's World Championships next summer in Nanjing, China.
