U.S. National Teams Announced
Six members of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team are among the 17 players selected to the U.S. National Team, which will compete in the 2002 ISF Women's World Championship July 26-August 4 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, it was announced by USA Softball.
An additional 17 players were chosen for the USA Softball Elite Team, which will compete against the National Team in scrimmages and exhibitions. Both teams will compete in the Canada Cup July 12-21 in Surrey, British Columbia. The two teams were selected from among 57 players who participated in a tryout camp May 30-June 2 in Chula Vista, Calif.
The National Team will be coached by Mike Candrea, who was announced last week (May 28) as the head coach of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Softball Team. He will be assisted at the World Championship by Ken Eriksen and John Rittman.
Jay Miller will serve as head coach of the Elite Team, while Michelle Gromacki and Kirk Walker will serve as assistants.
The six Olympians named to the U.S. National Team are Leah O'Brien-Amico, Laura Berg, Lisa Fernandez, Lori Harrigan, Stacey Nuveman and Michele Smith.
The U.S. is aiming for its fifth consecutive world championship. The top five finishers qualify for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
