Schutt Sports Given One-Year Waiver for Embossed Seal on Helmets

Schutt Sports has been granted a one-year waiver of the NCAA Softball Rules Book requirement that batting helmets bear the embossed NOCSAE seal to be approved for play (Rule 3-7, page 42).

"The waiver for the 2002 NCAA softball playing season is granted only because Schutt has assured the committee (NCAA Softball Rules Committee) all batting helmets meet the NOCSAE impact standard, and inventory issues have caused stickered (rather than molded in) helmets to be shipped," wrote NCAA Secretary-Rules Editor Dee Abrahamson in a letter to Schutt.

The helmets must still include the tamper-resistant NOCSAE-approved sticker. By accepting this waiver, Schutt Sports accepts all responsibility and agrees to indemnify the NCAA for use of the batting helmets throughout the season.

Coaches whose teams use Schutt Sports helmets should print this article and carry it with them in the event the legality of the helmets is questioned.
