WPSL To Suspend Play In 2002, Plans To Begin Anew In 2003

Excerpted from the October, 2001 issue of NFCA Fastpitch Delivery.

Citing a lack of acceptable softball facilities, the relaunching of the "New WPSL" will have to wait at least one more year as the Women's Pro Softball League announced it has delayed the restart of the league until 2003.

The WPSL, which fielded six teams from 1997-99, slimmed down to a four-team league in 2000, with two franchises located in Akron, Ohio, and two in Plant City, Fla. In 2001, the WPSL canceled league play and embarked on the "Tour of Fastpitch Champions," pitting a team of WPSL veterans against a team of players who competed or were alternates in the 2000 Olympics.

There will be no tour or league play in 2002, although the league said it will contract some of the players for clinics and promotional appearances.

The league looks to have at least 10 franchises beginning in 2003. The WPSL expects to announce the first six franchises in late January, with additional franchises announced in the spring and summer.
