Canada Cup: USA Blue Wins First Round, USA Red Falls to Japan Red

USA Blue defeated Phoenix Storm 10-0 in three innings, while USA Red fell to Japan Red 1-0 in eight innings in first-round playoff action at the 2001 Canada Cup in Surrey, British Columbia.

Jenny Topping's grand slam home run highlighted a seven-run second inning and Britni Sneed pitched three hitless innings to lead USA Blue. Topping added a two-run single in the third inning to give her six runs batted in for the game.

Naomi Arai homered over the centerfield fence with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to lift Japan Red over USA Red. USA Red was unable to get any runners past second base after the first inning.

USA Blue (8-1) plays today at 1 p.m. (EDT) against the winner of Friday's Australia/Decatur Twisters game. USA Red (6-3) takes on the California A's today at 3 p.m. in an elimination game.
