This Week In Fastpitch

AL STATE FULLERTON CLOSES IN ON HISTORY:The No. 8 Cal State Fullerton softball team, winners of 11 of their last 12 and 21 of their last 24, travel to No. 25 Cal State Northridge this weekend needing just one more win for the program's 1000th victory. The three-game series against Cal State Northridge kicks off on Saturday (Apr. 28) at Noon Pacific Daylight time with a doubleheader and concludes with a single game on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 29). The Titans have compiled a 999-402-4 (.711) overall record in the sport at the university.

WILDCATS SET HR MARK:Senior centerfielder Lauren Bauer's 10th home run of the season was Arizona's101st of the year to set an NCAA single-season team record and punctuated a 7-0 victory over No. 3-ranked Stanford

TAKE ME OUT TO THE CROWD:The University of Louisiana-Lafayette's home doubleheader against fifth-ranked LSU last week drew 1,729 fans to Lady Cajun Park, the largest attendance ever at a collegiate softball game in the state of Louisiana. The teams split the twinbill, with the Lady Cafuns winning the opener, 2-1, and the Tigers taking the nightcap, 5-0.

JESSAME MUCHO:Humboldt State University pitcher Jessame Kendall has been a workhorse, especially during the last two weeks since Amy Terrones became unavailable. During a seven-game span, Kendall pitched in 40 consecutive innings and 58 of the team's 62-plus innings since April 10. Kendall picked up six wins during the stretch (four over the past road trip), including a one-hit shutout over Seattle on Saturday. The one-hit shutout was her 15th career one-hitter. With 26 complete games to date this season, Kendall has recorded 91 career complete games and has tossed 918 innings.

MEANWHILE,....: It was much the same story for Cal State Bakersfield pitcher Melanie Wood, who capped an amazing week (not to meiton an amazing Sunday) by wining for the fourth time while leading CSUB to its second consecutive Mt. Dew Classic title. Wood threw 39.0 innings during the week, allowing just one earned run. She threw 19 innings Sunday (9 vs. Western New Mexico and 10 vs. Stanislaus), allowing no earned runs. Junior centerfielder Tracy Szobonya's two-out single drove in Valerie Rodriguez from third base with the game winner. CSUB is the first repeat champion at the Mt. Dew Classic since Portland State (1991-93).

TRUDELL WANTS (AND GETS) IT ALL:UT-Chattanooga senior Talya Trudell, who plays pitcher and center field for the Lady Mocs, has been named Southern Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week. Trudell led the Lady Mocs to a 6-1 record last week by winning four times as a pitcher. She pitched 23 innings with just one earned run (0.30 ERA) and lowered her season ERA to 0.94. She had back-to-back shutouts at Autsin Peay (her second no-hitter of the season) and at UNC Greensboro (four-hitter). She yielded just 13 hits with 27 strikeouts (10 vs. Austin Peay) and just two walks last week. As a hitter, Trudell went 9-for-16 last week (.562) with a double, triple and her first career home run. A native of Chino Hills, Calif., Trudell captured wins over Georgia Tech and Austin Peay and she won both of UTC's games against UNC Greensboro. The pitching award is the second straight for Trudell and the hitting award is her first. It is the sixth time a UTC pitcher has received the honor and the fourth time Chattanooga has received the player honor

RECORD-BREAKERAuburn Senior Mary Petrie broke the school record for most home runs in a game with three in game two against Tennessee as the Tigers earned a split of the Southeastern Conference doubleheader with a 5-2 win Petrie broke the previous record of two home runs in a single game which she set last season against Tennessee. The Tigers scored first in the second game when Ashley Moore scored on a sacrifice fly from Michelle Martin. Petrie then hit her first home run of the game making the score 2-0.

MILESTONES: LSU Coach Yvette Girouard notched her 800th career win as her fifth-ranked Tigers swept Kentucky in an April 21 Southeastern Conference doubleheader in Baton Rouge, 12-0 in five innings and 5-2. St. Louis Comminty College at Meramec's Celeste Knierim paicked up her 900th carrer victory on April 14 with a win over Indian Hills Community College. Knierim's team has won 39 of its last 42 games since going 3-7-1 on an Arizona trip to open the season. University of Southern Indiana coach Beth Watson garnered her 300th career win, a 6-0 decision over McKendree College on April 24.
