Iowa Senior Brittany Weil Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week

Iowa senior pitcher Brittany Weil has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for the week ending May 10, 2009, the NFCA announced on Tuesday. This is the final weekly award for the 2009 season.

Weil went 4-0 last week with an 0.30 ERA for the Hawkeyes to close out the regular season. She tossed her fifth no-hitter of the season in game one against Wisconsin, breaking Iowa's career record for most hitless games in a career. She took a perfect game into the fifth with the Hawkeyes leading 8-0, but committed a throwing error with one out in the inning. She managed to get the final two outs after a 45-minute rain delay to secure the no-hitter.

Weil saved the best for last on "Senior Day" at Pearl Field, shattering Iowa's single-season strikeout record, along with tying the Iowa career record for wins (99), complete games (109) and games pitched (181). Weil fanned 20 batters Saturday to set the new single-season mark at 328.

The Garden Grove, CA, native threw 14-straight innings of shutout ball against the Golden Gophers Saturday. In game one, Weil broke the single-season strikeout mark at Iowa, recording 11 K's and only giving up five hits.

She followed with another near no-hitter in game two. Weil had a no-hitter heading into the seventh, but Minnesota managed to break it up with a single. She tossed another complete game, allowing just two hits with only one walk and 11 strikeouts.

For the week, Weil went 4-0 with complete game shutouts and a microscopic 0.30 ERA. She threw 23.2 innings and struck out 32 of the 51 batters she faced.

The Hawkeyes, who are receiving votes in this week’s USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll, open NCAA Tournament play on Friday, May 15, at 4 pm CDT against Auburn. The regional site is hosted by Georgia Tech.
