West Texas A&M Sophomore Kaitlyn Witte and Rollins senior Nicole Anderson have been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the NFCA announced on Wednesday. Both student-athletes have been honored for their performances in the week ending April 12, 2009.
Kaitlyn Witte, a sophomore first baseman, hit .769 over a four-game span last week, helping the Lady Buffs to doubleheader sweeps of Incarnate Word and Eastern New Mexico. For the week, she went 10-for-13 from the plate, including a pair of doubles and two home runs, driving in six runs. She posted a 1.385 slugging percentage. In the Lady Buffs sweep of Incarnate Word, the Midland, Texas, native went 6-for-7 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. The following day against ENMU, she was 4-for-6 from the plate with five RBI.
Senior pitcher Nicole Anderson led Rollins to a key conference series win over then-No. 23 Tampa. In the opening game of the series, Anderson threw a no-hitter while striking out 12, leading the Tars to a 3-0 victory. She surrendered one walk but did not allow a runner to reach second base.
Anderson also picked up the win in the rubber game of the series, a 2-1 eight-inning thriller. Allowing just five hits and one run, she punched out 11 batters. For the week, Anderson went 2-0 with 23 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched with a 0.47 ERA. She limited opposing batters to a .104 batting average, walked two and only allowed eight to reach base.
