Florida Southern’s Natalie Lang and Julie Wingerter of Lewis Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Week

Florida Southern outfielder Natalie Lang and Lewis pitcher Julie Wingerter have been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, the NFCA announced on Wednesday. The award is for performances in games played from Feb. 23-Mar. 1, 2009.

Lang, a senior from Lakeland, Fla., hit .750 over four games played last week. In two games against Armstrong Atlantic State and two against Georgia Southwestern, Lang went 9-for-12 with one double, one stolen base, two walks and nine RBI to lead the Moccasins to four shutout wins. She had at least two hits and one RBI in every game, including four RBI in a 10-0 win over Armstrong Atlantic that started the Mocs’ four-game trip to St. Augustine. Seven of her nine hits over the weekend drove in at least one run, and Lang also scored a run after leading off an inning with another base hit.

Wingerter, a senior from Channahon, Ill., was dominant in her two appearances against NYIT and Wilmington (Del.) as she threw 12 innings of scoreless ball while holding her opponents to a .077 batting average and just three total hits. Her most impressive performance was an 8-0, five-inning no-hitter against Wilmington (Del.) on Sunday, striking out seven batters. With the wins, Wingerter improved to 3-1 on the season with a team-best 1.99 ERA and 28 strikeouts.

Lewis is ranked No. 14 in this week’s NFCA Division II Top 25 poll.
