Tennessee’s Tonya Callahan Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week

Tennessee senior third baseman Tonya Callahan has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for the week ending April 20, it was announced on Tuesday.

Callahan hit .667 (4-of-6) with three home runs and seven RBI last week, over five total match-ups against Ole Miss and No. 11 LSU. She reached base safely on 16 of the 18 occasions (.889) she came to the plate and was so feared offensively that she was walked 12 times, including seven times intentionally.

From the second game versus Ole Miss through the first two contests of the series with LSU, Callahan reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances recording three home runs and six walks. In the 8-0 (5 inn.) rout of the Bayou Bengals, Callahan delivered a 2-for-2 performance with two three-run home runs and equaled her career single-game high of six RBIs. The second of those three-run bombs against LSU marked the 50th homer of her illustrious career. Callahan is currently tied for the Tennessee single-season home run record with 15, equaling the Big Orange standard set back in 1996 before SEC play began by former Lady Vol Bridget Jackson.

Tennessee is ranked at No. 13 in today’s USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll.
