Southern Illinois' Scoggins Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week

Southern Illinois pitcher Cassidy Scoggins has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week, it was announced by the association on Wednesday.

Scoggins, a sophomore from Owasso, Okla., had an incredible week for the Salukis. She went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA. She tossed two no-hitters, a one-hitter, three shutouts, three complete games while striking out 29 in 23 innings and giving up just one hit and two walks. Opponents hit just .014 (1-for-70) against her in four appearances.

"I just this is was a special weekend for her and a special feat. She's been having a really good year. I'm proud of her and it says a lot about her and the program since we've never won this honor before. It's a great honor," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach. "It's really special and we're proud of what she's accomplished. She has exceeded all my expectations as far as pitching goes."

Scoggins opened the week with a one-hitter against Missouri Valley Conference rival Evansville. She followed up with her first seven-inning no-hitter in a 7-0 win over Southwest Missouri State. A leadoff walk in the second inning kept her from a perfect game, but still faced the minimum 21 batters in the contest.

On Sunday, Scoggins tossed another no-hitter against SMS in a 3-0 win, again coming within one batter (reached on error) from a perfect game. She came in relief and faced six batters, striking out three in an 8-1 win over Evansville to end the week.

"It's awesome to get this award from the NFCA. It's a great thing to get recognition on a national level. I never expected to win these national awards, it's such an honor," said Scoggins.

In addition, Scoggins provided two doubles and two RBIs on the week. On the season, she is 17-3 with a 0.58 ERA. She has posted 14 complete games in 15 starts.
