Day I Notes - NCAA Division III Women's Softball Championship

Thursday, May 20 - Rain permitted one full game and two innings of another to be played on Thursday. Simpson defeated Messiah, 4-0, in the only complete game of opening day. In the second game, Bridgewater State (MA) and Rowan (NJ) were scoreless at the end of two innings before play was halted. That game will resume at 11 a.m. Central time Friday morning.

Simpson College (IA) 4, Messiah College (PA) 0
Simpson pitcher Kelly Schade broke her own NCAA Division III single-season strikeout record with eight K's against Messiah ... Schade , who limited Messiah to three singles and no walks, brought her 1999 strikeout total to 348, breaking the previous Division III mark of 341 she set last season ... The shutout was Schade's 24th of the year ... The start of the game was delayed one hour by rain and there was a 30-minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth ... At the time of the delay, Simpson had runners at second and third with one out and a 1-0 lead ... The first pitch following the delay was to left fielder Amber Ridnour, whose bunt single scored the runner from third ... The next Simpson batter, designated player Sarah Eggleston, smacked a two-run single to account for the Storm's final runs ... Simpson opened the scoring in the first inning on Julie Kostner's RBI triple .... In an attempt to force opponents to pitch to catcher Michelle Fowler, Simpson coach Henry Christowski moved his cleanup-hitting player to the leadoff spot and switched his leadoff hitter, right fielder Julie Kostner to cleanup ... Fowler, a .488 batter who leads the Storm in bases on balls (22), drew a walk to open the game ... Pinch-runner, Kelly Behmer, then advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch, and scored the game's first run on Kostner's triple ... Christowski made the lineup switch of the final game of last week's Midwest Regional championship game, a 6-0 win over St. Mary's (MN).
