Mendoza Homers Twice as U.S. Opens II World Cup of Softball with 14-0 Rout of Great Britain

USA vs. Great Britain Box Score

USA Softball kicked off the II World Cup of Softball in strong fashion, shutting out Great Britain 14-0 Thursday night in Oklahoma City.

The U.S. pounded out 16 hits in the five-inning victory that avenged last year’s opening-round loss to Canada.

Team USA put up two runs in the first inning off Jessica Mendoza’s round-tripper that scored Caitlin Lowe. Mendoza added another home run in the third as she went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead a U.S. attack in which six players had multiple base hits.

That would be all the offense the U.S. would need as Monica Abbott (Salinas, Calif.) blanked Great Britain with six strikeouts over the opening three innings. Alicia Hollowell, who won the Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player honors on the same field just over a month ago, retired the side in the fourth before Jennie Finch struck out three straight Great Britain hitters in the fifth.

The U.S. scored six runs in the third as the team went through the order. Natasha Watley, who scored twice and drove in two runs on a 3-for-4 outing, tripled to score Laura Berg following her single to right field. With two outs, Mendoza hit her second home run of the contest, a two-run blast.

Mike Candrea’s squad followed the six-run third with another six runs in the fourth. With two runners on, Andrea Duran delivered a three-run home run to left for her first hit in international competition. Mendoza capped her night with an RBI single.

The U.S. gets its opportunity to avenge last year’s opening-game upset when it meets Canada Friday at 7:30 p.m. EST on ESPN.
