OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – USA Softball announced the list of athletes who have been invited to its upcoming selection camps for the 2006 USA Softball Women’s National Team and the 2006 World University Games team. The World University Games selection camp will be held June 9-11 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., and will be followed by the Women’s National Team camp June 13-17. The Women’s National Team will represent the United States at three events this year including the II World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla., the only National Team event held on American soil.
A total of 30 players have been selected to attend the Women’s National Team Camp including the 26 member National Training Team selected back in September of last year. The USA Softball Women’s National Team will compete at the II World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City (July 13-17), the ISF Women’s World Championships in Beijing, China (August 21- September 7) and the Japan Cup in Yokohama, Japan (November 13-20).
During the ISF Women’s World Championships in Beijing, the U.S. will be seeking its sixth consecutive World Championship gold medal. In addition to the opportunity to be crowned world champion, the ability to secure a berth in the 2008 Olympic Games will be on the line. The top four finishers at the World Championship will qualify for the Olympic Softball competition taking place almost exactly two years later (August 2008).
The 27 participants invited to the World University Team Selection Camp come from 11 different colleges.
