NCAA Answers Issues Surrounding Student-Athletes from Schools Affected by Hurricane Katrina

The NCAA national office has received many questions from institutions, student-athletes and parents related to whether a student-athlete from an institution affected by the hurricane can transfer and participate in athletics practice and/or competition at their new institution.

It is important to note that all transfer rules remain applicable, including the requirement that an institution receive permission to contact a student-athlete from another institution and the requirement that the first institution grant permission to use the one-time transfer exception, if applicable.

It is also important to note that the affected institutions are making every effort to continue providing competition opportunities for their student-athletes. Their desire to do so should be respected and is consistent with the flexibility the national office is permitting in allowing student-athletes to represent their original institutions while enrolled at other institutions.

Coaches and staff members should be advised that the transfer rules remain in effect and any relief from these rules shall be reviewed on a case-by-case basis through the appropriate process.

The NCAA is encouraging coaches to work closely with their school's compliance officers for questions on these issues.
