Osterman, Team USA Win ESPY Awards

What does Cat Osterman have in common with Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning? The answer is a multiple ESPY Award winner. 


The University of Texas standout won an individual and team ESPY award at the ceremony Wednesday night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The ESPY Awards is in its 13th year of being presented to the world’s best athletes in various categories. 

Osterman won the award for Best Female College Athlete after compiling a 30-7 record and a nation-best 0.36 ERA. She recorded 15.2 strikeouts per seven innings, a new national record. The Houston, Texas, native won the Honda Award for softball as well as USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. 

Osterman, who beat out LSU basketball standout Seimone Augustus, Harvard hockey player Nicole Corriero, UCLA gymnast Kristen Maloney and Notre Dame soccer player Katie Thorlakson for the collegiate award, claimed a second ESPY as the United States National Team beat out U.S. swimmer Natalie Coughlin and gymnastics standout Carly Patterson for the award for Best Female Olympic Performance. 

The United States squad outscored opponents 51-1 en route to claiming a third-straight softball gold medal. The U.S. went on to earn a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated. 

The ESPY Awards will be broadcast Sunday, July 17 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
