Eastern Connecticut's Rathbun and UW-Oshkosh's Tornow Split NFCA Division III Player of the Week Honors

Eastern Connecticut sophomore Molly Rathbun and Wisconsin-Oshkosh senior Whitney Tornow have been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III Co-Players of the Week for the week ending April 11, the association has announced. Rathbun led No. 16 Eastern to a 5-1 week from the circle and at the plate, while Tornow paced UW-Oshkosh to a 2-2 record on the week.

In four appearances, Rathbun won three starts and had a save, which helped improve Eastern’s record to 13-3. She completed all four starts with a shutout and allowed only two earned runs in 24 2/3 innings for a 0.57 ERA. Rathbun fanned 41 and walked just five, and opponents batted .115 against her.

The Hebron, Conn., native broke her own program record by pitching 40 consecutive innings without an earned run over parts of seven games. She pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and three walks in an eight-inning, 3-2 win over host Coast Guard. Rathbun has not allowed a triple or home run in 68 1/3 innings this year.

Rathbun also hit safely in all six games to extend her hitting streak to 14 – four shy of the program record. She batted .611 (11-for-18) with three doubles and a home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored. She also handled 15 chances in the field without an error.

Tornow hit an astonishing .857 (12-for-14) with three home runs, four doubles, 10 runs batted in and five runs scored as UW-Oshkosh played doubleheaders against UW-La Crosse and the University of Chicago.

In home losses of 9-2 and 13-5 to then-17th-ranked UW-La Crosse, the Nennah, Wis., native combined to go 6-for-7 with one home run, one double, five runs batted in and one run scored. She had three hits in both contests, with a home run and three runs batted in during the 13-5 setback.

UW-Oshkosh also split a road doubleheader with Chicago as Tornow combined to go 6-for-7 with two home runs, three doubles, five runs batted in and four runs scored.
