Splitsville again. IGA Catches Up, Falls behind on Saturday

For the second day in a row, USA Gold and Team IGA split their doubleheader in the Coca-Cola USA Softball American Challenge Series. Team IGA won the first game 4-3, while USA Gold took game two 8-0.

In the first game, Team IGA erased a three-run deficit and Kelly Kretschman's leadoff home run in the top of the fifth put Team IGA ahead to stay. Leah O'Brien-Amico's RBI-single in the bottom of the second broke a scoreless tie, and Sheila Douty and Jennifer Brundage added run-scoring singles in the third inning to give USA Gold a 3-0 lead.

Team IGA tied the game with three runs in the fourth inning. After a double by Barbara Jordan and a pair of walks loaded the bases, Lisa Carey was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Dani Tyler singled home a run. Nina Lindenberg, who had reached on a bases on balls, scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Kretschman drove the first pitch over the right field fence to give Team IGA the lead for good.

USA Gold threatened in the seventh with a two-out walk to Lisa Fernandez and a double by Crystl Bustos. But Team IGA pitcher Christa Williams recorded a strikeout to end the game.

Williams went the distance, striking out seven and surviving a 10-hit attack by USA Gold.

Game two was all USA Gold as Amanda Scott pitched a two-hit shutout. USA Gold used Michele Smith's two-run single and a fielding error by Team IGA to score four runs in the first inning.

Leah O'Brien-Amico doubled home two runs in the third inning to extend USA Gold's lead to 6-0. Stacey Nuveman capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Scott finished with six strikeouts and struck out the side in the fifth inning to close out the game.

USA Gold leads the series 6-5-1. The series concludes Monday with a doubleheader at Oklahoma City, Okla.
