National Champion ETBU Named 2010 NFCA Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The staff of 2010 national champion East Texas Baptist, including head coach Janae Shirley and assistants Bill Galloway, Dani Miller and Guy Shirley, has been named as the 2010 National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year, the Association has announced.

Shirley and her staff led the Tigers to the school's first national championship last month in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and finished with a 40-12 overall record. At the national championship, the 5-4 championship game win over Linfield marked the third comeback victory for ETBU; in all, 15 of the Tigers' 23 runs in the tournament were scored in the fifth, sixth or seventh innings. ETBU closed its championship season by winning eight straight games in regional and national championship play, and the Tigers either trailed or were tied in the last two innings in six of those.

Individual standouts for East Texas Baptist included senior pitcher Ayrika Henderson, who was recently selected as the American Southwest Conference Female Athlete of the Year. Henderson went 21-7 with a 1.74 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 157 1/3 innings, and she was the winning pitcher in six of the Lady Tigers’ final seven games, including the national title-clinching victory.

The national championship season was Shirley's third at ETBU, and her overall record now stands at 105-36 (.745 win percentage).

East Texas Baptist was also named the West region Coaching Staff of the Year. Other regional winners included: Christopher Newport University, Atlantic Region; DePauw University, Central Region; Moravian College, East Region; Aurora University, Great Lakes Region; Luther College, Midwest Region; Eastern Connecticut State, New England Region; and Ithaca College, Northeast Region.
