Hawaii Pacific Tops Wayne St. (MI) in DII Championship Debut

Game 3
No. 3 Hawaii Pacific 3, No. 7 Wayne State (MI) 1 | Box Score

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Third-ranked Hawaii Pacific made its national championship debut a memorable one on Thursday, when it beat No. 7 Wayne State (MI), 3-1, in the third game of the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships at Heritage Park in St. Joseph.

Hawaii Pacific struck first in the third inning when senior Casey Sugihara drove in two runs off of a single to left field, only to be thrown out at second base to end the inning.

The final run of the game for the Sea Warriors (47-8) came in the fourth inning off of a single by senior pitcher Sherise Musquiz that scored freshman Pomaikai Kalakau.

Wayne State (52-12) threatened in the seventh thanks to an error by Hawaii Pacific that allowed junior Stephanie LeClair to score and put the tying run at home plate. However, senior Nicole Able was unable to convert on the final at bat and flied out to right field, giving the Sea Warriors the 3-1 win.

Musquiz won the battle of 2010 Lousiville Slugger/NFCA first-team All-American pitchers by giving up no earned runs off of just three hits for her 31st win of the season. Senior Casey Hanes took the loss for Wayne State by giving up five runs and three hits, while striking out five.

Hawaii Pacific awaits the winner of Thursday's final game between No. 4 Metro State and No. 19 Angelo State with the two winners playing on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CDT. Meanwhile, Wayne State will take on the loser of the same match-up in an elimination game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
