Akron Beats Virginia, 4-1, To Take WPSL Semifinal Series
AKRON, Ohio - Aug. 25 - The Akron Racers captured a berth in the 1999 WPSL Championship Series after winning game two of the inaugural WPSL Championship Semifinal 4-1 over the Virginia Roadsters Wednesday at Firestone Stadium.
Akron swept Virginia two games to none in the best-of-three series. Racers ace Sarah Dawson recorded her first career postseason victory Wednesday after throwing a two-hit complete-game over the Roadsters. The 1997 WPF Most Valuable Player struck out two and walked none in seven innings pitched. Virginia ace Kaci Clark lost her second consecutive postseason start, despite not allowing an earned run in six innings pitched Wednesday. Clark surrendered five hits, while striking out five and walking two.Akron jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Leah Braatz and a sacrifice-fly by Nicole Odom.
Roadsters catcher Scia Maumausolo made it a one-run game with a two-out, solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning. The Racers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out in the fifth, Tobin Echo-Hawk reached first on an error by Virginia shortstop Sarah Fredstrom. Echo-Hawk advanced to third on a single by Traci Conrad, who stole second before Kellyn Tate struck out swinging for the second out of the inning. Echo-hawk and Conrad later scored on a two out, two-run single up the middle by Crystl Bustos to make it 4-1. Bustos won Tuesday's game with a two-out, sixth-inning single that scored Conrad from second. Bustos went 2-for-6 with one run scored and three RBI in games one and two of the 1999 WPSL Championship Semifinal. Akron's pitching staff limited Virginia to one run on five hits in the series. The Roadsters committed four errors in their two postseason games.
The Racers will meet the first-place Tampa Bay FireStix in the 1999 WPSL Championship Series Friday, Aug. 27 (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, Aug. 28 (5:30 p.m.) at Firestone Stadium. If necessary, game three will be played 20 minutes after the conclusion of game two. ESPN2 will televise the final game of the WPSL Championship Series Monday, Sept. 6 at 9:30 p.m. EDT.

Tickets cost $7 for stadium seats, $6 for grandstand seats and $5 for general admission seats.
