USA Defeats New Zealand in Olympic Cup Opener

San Diego, CA---The USA Softball Women's National Team defeated New Zealand 4-1 in its opening game of the 1999 Bank of America/U.S. Olympic Cup in San Diego on Friday night, Sept. 10.

The USA scored runs in each of the first three innings to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Sheila Douty drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the first with a single to center field that scored Teri Klement. Stacey Nuveman then doubled to score Crystl Bustos, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to give the USA a 2-0 lead. Jennifer Brundage walked in the bottom of the second, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single down the left field line by Laura Berg.

The USA completed its scoring in the bottom of the third when Christie Ambrosi singled to center field to score Jennifer McFalls, who was pinch-running for Douty. New Zealand posted its only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Melanie Hulme walked and scored on a double by Jackie Smith. Nuveman led the USA at the plate going 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Bustos also collected two hits. Dot Richardson, Berg, Douty and Ambrosi each had hits for the USA.

The USA continues play on Saturday when they face Canada at 11:30 a.m. (PST) and Australia at 5:00 p.m. (PST).
