Team USA Wins Olympic Cup Gold

San Diego, CA - Australia didn't take advantage of its first-inning opportunity, but Team USA capitalized during its first at-bat, and that was the difference as the USA posted a 5-0 victory Sunday afternoon in the gold medal game of the 1999 Bank of America/U.S. Olympic Cup.

Christa Williams, who worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, went on to pitch a complete game two-hitter as Team USA defeated Australia for the second time in two days.

After escaping the Australian threat, Team USA responded in dominating fashion, as Sheila Douty roped an RBI double and Stacey Nuveman launched a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first. Those four runs would be enough, but the USA tacked on one more run in the fourth when Teri Klement drew a bases loaded walk that scored Leah O'Brien-Amico.

Australia put itself in position to draw first blood after Sue Fairhurst walked, Frankie McRae was hit by a pitch and Kerry Dienelt singled, but Williams, with one out, forced a 6-2-3 double play that ended the inning.

Team USA then responded with its four-run first and Williams regained her composure, allowing just one more hit for the duration of the game.

Dot Richardson and Laura Berg each had two hits for Team USA, while Dienelt and Fiona Hanes had the hits for Australia. Kelly Hardie was charged with the loss for Australia after giving up four earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

A replay of the championship game will be broadcast Monday at 7:30 p.m. (EST) on ESPN2. ?
