Barton’s McFadden & Dowling’s Stavola Named NFCA Division II National Player & Pitcher of the Week

Jessica McFaddenSTARKVILLE, Miss. – Center fielder Jessica McFadden of Barton and Jessie Stavola of Dowling have been named as the NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played March 14-20, 2011.

McFadden was a terror on the base paths for Barton last week, swiping 22 out of 23 bases attempted. In addition the senior went 22-for-38 over the 10-game stretch with 17 runs, four RBI, four walks and a double. She ended the week with a batting average of .579 and an on-base percentage of .619.

Through nine games last week, the Wilmington, N.C., native had already stolen 14 bases, but it was apparent she was saving her best for last. In the final game of a doubleheader against Shaw on Saturday, McFadden set a new NCAA all-division record by stealing eight bases in eight attempts. In fact, for the week she was only caught stealing once in 23 total attempts.

For the season, McFadden currently has a team-high batting average of .491 and also leads the team in hits, runs and walks with 57, 33 and 37, respectively.

Between the doubleheader with Shaw and eight games at the National Collegiate Sports Invite in North Myrtle Beach, S.C, the Bulldogs finished the week with a 9-1 record, bringing thier overall record to 16-16. On Monday, Baton fell back below the .500 mark with two losses to conference foe Erskine, but will look to rebound this weekend with two-game league sets against both Coker and Queens (N.C.).

Stavola was nothing short of dominant for Dowling last week as she went 3-0 with a save over 20.2 innings of work. The junior allowed no runs, earned or unearned, off of four hits on the week, while walking only three and striking out 47.

The Montauk, N.Y. native posted at least 10 strikeouts in each of her three complete games on the week and struck out seven of eight batters over 2.2 innings in her lone relief appearances. Out of the 68 batters that Stavola faced on the week, she sat down 47 of them to give her a strikeout percentage of 69.1 percent.

Stavola is currently 6-0 on the year and has yet to allow an earned or unearned run in any of her seven appearances. With 88 strikeouts and just 10 walks so far this season, she entered the new week averaging 16.3 strikeouts per seven innings and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8.8:1

The 22nd-ranked Golden Lions are currently 10-1 after suffering their first loss of the year on Tuesday at the hands of No. 18 Augustana (SD).
