NAIA Softball Nationals Will Return To Decatur, Alabama

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that the NAIA Softball National Championship will return to Decatur, Ala., and the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in May of the years 2000 and 2001.

Both the 1996 and 1997 tournaments were held in Decatur with the Decatur Parks and Recreation Department serving as the host, a designation it will hold again in the next two softball championships.

The 1998 and 1999 tournaments were held in Tulsa, Okla., and Palm Beach County, Fla., as part of the Spring Championship Games. Athens State College, located in nearby Athens, will again receive an automatic bid in both years as the tournament's host institution.

"Decatur is pleased to be awarded the bid for the 2000 and 2001 NAIA National Softball Championships," says Carol S. Goforth, program superintendent for the Decatur Parks and Recreation Department. "We hosted the tournaments in 1996 and 1997 and look forward to the opportunity to have this great event return to our city."

NAIA President and CEO Steve Baker adds: "If not for the softball championship's inclusion in the Spring Championship Games format, the event probably would have remained in Decatur. We are excited to return the tournament to the city. The Decatur Parks and Recreation Department has served as an excellent host in the past, and we expect the same success over the next two years."

Decatur is located in Morgan County on the Tennessee River, 120 miles south of Nashville, 85 miles north of Birmingham, Ala., and 20 miles west of Huntsville, Ala.
