The Woodlands Remains No. 1 in the USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25


NFCASTARKVILLE, Miss - In celebration of its top ranking, The Woodlands High School (Woodlands, Texas) won a pair of District 5A-14 games to remain this week’s top team in the USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25, which was released Thursday by the Association.

The Woodlands improved to 27-0 by rolling over Conroe (9-0) and Atascocita (24-0). In the win over Conroe, Paige McDuffee gave up one hit over six innings of work. Jessica Snyder homered twice and drove in six runs in the rout of Atascocita.

Elsewhere in the poll, No. 4 Alexander Central High School (Taylorsville, North Carolina) had a mighty fine week. Coach Monte Sherrill’s squad won three games to improve to 10-0. The Cougars knocked off Fred T. Ford, 6-1, prior to beating Alabama’s top-ranked team Hueytown, 4-0 and 10th-ranked nationally Riverdale of Tennessee, 3-1.

Sherrill earned his 600th coaching win in the victory over Fred T. Ford. Meanwhile, pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson has topped the 800-strikeout mark for her standout career.

Meanwhile, American Heritage (Plantation, Florida) remains second at 18-0, while Etiwanda (Etiwanda, California) remains third at 12-0. Alexander Central flipped places with Valencia (Valencia, California), which is 12-1 and fell to fifth.

The USA Today/NFCA Top 25 is compiled by state representatives from across the country.

Records for this week’s poll include all games played through April 3, 2011.
