California’s Henderson Named Division I NFCA National Player of the Week
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Sophomore pitcher Jolene Henderson of California has been named as the NFCA National Player of the Week for games played Apr. 11-17, 2011.
Henderson won three games and picked up a save for the Golden Bears last week by helping pilot her team to a non-conference win over St. Mary’s (CA) and a three-game Pac-10 sweep of then 17th-ranked Oregon. Over the four-game stretch, the sophomore allowed no earned runs off of 15 hits, while striking out 23 and walking only five. Henderson ended the week with a 0.00 ERA, an opponent’s batting average of .190 and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
The native of Elk Grove, Calif., struck out seven batters in each of her three wins on the week and added an additional two in her three-inning appearance during the series finale with Oregon, in which she registered her first save of the season and the fourth of her career. Henderson also recorded two shutouts on the week, which moved her to 10 total on the season. She entered the week tied for fifth in the nation in shutouts.
Currently, Henderson is 25-5 on the year with a 0.78 ERA and 196 strikeouts. In the last NCAA statistical rankings, she ranked second in the country in victories and fifth fourth in ERA. She also ranks in the top 50 in three other categories: hits allowed per seven innings (18th), strikeouts (28th) and walks allowed per seven innings (47th).
After going 4-0 last week, No. 12 California is currently 28-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference. This week, the Bears will continue Pac-10 play when they host Stanford for a three-game set.
