The Woodlands Continuing to Pace USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25

NFCASTARKVILLE, MS - Most of the nation’s elite high school softball teams keep on winning, as many states are getting geared up for postseason play. Only five ranked teams lost last week, so there are few changes in the latest USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25, posted Thursday by the Association.

For a fifth straight week, The Woodlands (Texas, 32-0) tops the poll. The Highlanders defeated College Park and Conroe this past week to close out a perfect, 32-game run through regular season play. In the circle, Paige McDuffee threw both shutouts. Offensively, Faith Bohack drove in five runs against College Park.

The Top Five teams are all undefeated. Also prepping for postseason play is No. 2 American Heritage (Florida, 21-0). The Patriots won twice this past week and continue to be led by Bailey Castro, who has homered 15 times this season. Following American Heritage is No. 3 Alexander Central (North Carolina, 17-0), No. 4 East Lake (Florida, 25-0) and No. 5 Hudsonville (Michigan, 4-0).

Nine of the Top Ten teams from last week’s ranking were able to complete a perfect week. Then No. 10-Valencia (California, 17-3) fell to Hart but remains ranked – 19th this week.

Poll newcomers this week include No. 23 Sarasota (Florida, 24-2) and co-Nos. 25 Sunrise Mountain (Arizona, 22-1) and Johansen (California, 16-0).

The USA Today/NFCA Top 25 is compiled by state representatives from across the country. Records for this week’s poll include all games played through April 24, 2011.
