WPSL To Hold Open Tryout At This Year's NFCA National Convention

The Women's Pro Softball League (WPSL) announced Tuesday that it will hold a national tryout on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Turley Field, 4200 54th Ave. South, on the campus of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The tryout will be held in conjunction with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Convention, which will take place Tuesday, November 30 through Saturday, December 4 at the Tradewinds Resort, 5500 Gulf Boulevard, in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.

The NFCA convention will also host the 2000 WPSL Senior Draft on Saturday, December 4 at 6:30 p.m. All interested women's fastpitch players who have completed their collegiate softball eligibility are invited to participate in the tryout. Several years of fastpitch softball experience are recommended. Prospective players can register for the open tryout by calling Hildred Deese in the WPSL National Office at (303) 316-7800.

Players will be asked to review a general information packet and return a questionnaire along with a $30 registration fee.

Directions to Turley Field and information regarding hotel accommodations will be included in the packet. The deadline to register for the tryout is Monday, Nov. 29, but walk-up registrants will be accepted on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Tryout participants should report to Turley Field by 9:15 a.m. to complete official registration and warmups.

"Our coaches will be looking for players who possess the combination of speed, power and athleticism needed to compete at the professional level," Deese said. "This is an excellent opportunity for amateur players to showcase their fastpitch softball abilities."

The WPSL, the world's premier professional fastpitch softball league for women, features former USA Softball Women's National Team members, collegiate All-Americans and all-conference selections. The league will begin its fourth season of play in June 2000 with four teams based in "WPSL National Training Centers" tentatively planned for Akron, Ohio and in the Tampa, Fla. area.

The 2000 season will also feature exhibition games between WPSL teams and the USA Softball Women's National Team in major cities across the nation.
