The Woodlands (Texas) Tops Final USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 Poll
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Woodlands (Texas) finished the 2011 season as the No. 1 team in the nation, according to the latest USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 poll that was released by the Association on Wednesday.
The Highlanders, who won the Texas 5A state title, finished the season at 44-1 and have now sat at the top of the weekly poll for 12 straight editions.
The only change to the top five this week came at No. 5, as Canyon del Oro (Ariz.), Gulliver Prep (Fla.) and Alexander Central (N.C.) all held on to their previous spots at two, three and four, respectively.
Last week’s No. 5, Kakauna (Wis.), suffered their first loss of the season at in the Division 1 sectional finals and a result fell to 21st in this week’s rankings.
The only team to fall out of the rankings in the final edition was Hudsonville (Mich), who lost to eventual champion Mattawan in the Division 1 quarterfinals.
Filling the void left by the Eagles was the Virginia Group AAA state champions Lee-Davis. After finishing as the state runner-up on four previous occasions, the Confederates finally captured their first state title by beating Battlefield, 1-0.The USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 Poll is compiled by state representatives from across the country.
