Championships Nearly Set After Two Full Days at Top Recruit Tournament
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Forty-six teams walked into the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla. on Friday in hopes of taking home hardware from the first-ever NFCA Top Recruit Tournament, after a full day of play on Saturday only 16 still have that opportunity. |
Bracket play kicked-off in exciting fashion on Saturday and by the end of the day, championship games in six of the seven brackets had been set. The two top brackets in the tournament, the 18U Gold and 16U Yellow, will feature two great match-ups, featuring two undefeated teams and two teams that fought their way back after dropping a contest in pool play.
In the 18U Gold bracket, undefeated Team North Florida-Fagan will take on Lady Gators-Flannery for the title. The Gators fell to Gainesville Gold-McFadyen in pool play but earned their way into the championship by beating Tampa Mustangs-Bell, 4-3, and club-mates, Lady Gators-Stump, 4-2. North Florida earned its title shot by topping Gold-McFadyen, 7-4 and Gold Coast Hurricanes-Norman, 2-1.
In the 16U Yellow bracket, the Miami Stingrays battled through the top bracket to the championship by blowing past Wildfire-Stutsman, 11-2, in the quarterfinals and clipping the Windemere Wildfire-Paulson, 2-0, in the semifinals. The two wins in bracket play come only after the Stingrays fell to Team Florida-Albritten/Gentile earlier in the day in pool play.
The Stingrays’ opponent in the Yellow bracket title tilt is High Intensity, who will enter the game with an unblemished 5-0 record. After winning its pool in the morning, High Intensity breezed to the finals by knocking off the Sarasota Heat and the Tampa Mustangs-Phil by scores of 13-2 and 6-4, respectively.
The inaugural 2011 NFCA Top Recruit tournament will wrap-up on Sunday with games at 9 a.m. ET and 11:30 a.m. ET. Both the Yellow and Gold bracket championships will be held at 11:30 a.m. at fields eight and nine, respectively. For complete scores and brackets, click here.
