Chattanooga Picked To Defend Its Southern Conference Title

Asheville, N.C. - The defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga softball team was chosen by a leaguewide panel of coaches and Sports Information Directors to repeat as SoCon regular-season champions, the league office announced on Thursday.

The Lady Mocs earned eight out of a possible 12 first-place votes from the six coaches and six SID's around the conference. Overall, UTC had 68 points. Georgia Southern, who won the SoCon Tournament in 1999, was second with four first-place votes and 63 points.

Chattanooga returns league pitcher-of-the-year Talya Trudell and conference freshman-of-the-year Beth Alexander. UTC was 48-18 last season and finished a perfect 16-0 in Southern Conference play. The Lady Mocs must replace three players who were named all-conference a year ago, including SoCon Player-of-the-Year Allison DeVries.

The conference tournament will be held in Greensboro, N.C., on May 5-7. This is the first season the winner of the SoCon Tournament will qualify for an NCAA Regional.
