Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player Of The Week

Courtney Blades, senior pitcher from the University of Southern Mississippi, is the first Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week for the 2000 season.

Blades, a native of Baton Rouge, LA, was named the MVP of the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana-Monroe. She struck out 60 batters in 30 innings and was a perfect 5-0 in tournament play. Blades just missed a perfect game in USM's 5-0 win over Southern Illinois, giving up an infield single in the sixth inning. She finished that game with 16 strikeouts. Later, Blades pitched three innings against Sam Houston State, combining with Felicia Gonzales for the second perfect game in USM softball history.

For the weekend, Blades worked 30 innings, allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), seven walks, 60 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.47. The only runs she allowed came in Southern Mississippi's 5-3 win over Wisconsin in the championship game.
