Central Oklahoma’s Whitmire & Sonoma State’s Lipperd Named As Louisville Slugger Division II National Player & Pitcher of the Week

Courtesy of Sonoma State Sports Information and Stephen Kirschenmann.STARKVILLE, Miss. – Senior infielder Megan Whitmire of Central Oklahoma and junior Samantha Lipperd of Sonoma State have been named as the Louisville Slugger Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played Feb. 27-March 4.

Whitmire helped lead the Bronchos to a 6-0 week by going 14-for-22 with eight runs, 12 RBIs, four home runs, three walks and two doubles. For the week, the senior batted .636, turned in an on-base percentage of .680 and slugged 1.273.

The Del, City, Okla., native homered in four of her team’s six contests last week and currently has six on the season. On the year, Whitmire is batting .424 with 21 RBIs and a .797 slugging percentage.

Central Oklahoma, which received votes in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 poll, is currently 15-3 on the year and is riding a 13-game win streak. The Bronchos opened this week by sweeping Cameron at home on Tuesday and will travel to Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern State this weekend.

Lipperd was 3-0 in four appearances last week for the Seawolves and finished the week with a 0.31 ERA. She allowed just one earned run in 22 innings of work last week while allowing just 10 hits and striking out 30. The junior from Boulder Creek, Calif., ended the week with two complete game shutouts and limited her opponent’s to a paltry .129 average.

This week’s award marks the third time in her career that Lipperd has earned the distinguished honor. She was previously recognized by the Association on two separate occasions last season, once on Feb. 16 and the again on May 4.

Currently this season, Lipperd is 11-1 with a 1.21 ERA and 105 strikeouts.

This week, the 23rd-ranked Seawolves will continue California College Athletic Association play when they travel to Chico for four games with No. 9 Cal State Chico.

Sam Pientack of Bloomsburg hit and even .500 over a 4-0 week for the Huskies that included 10 RBIs, nine runs, four home runs and two doubles… Tarleton State’s Samantha Swanda picked up two wins over then second-ranked West Texas A&M by allowing just six hits over 14 innings, including a one-hitter in the series finale Casey Williamson of Indianapolis scorched opposing pitchers last week by hitting .769 with four RBIs and four stolen bases… Indianapolis’ Jennifer DeMotte led the Greyhounds to three wins last week while striking out 31 and limiting opponents to a .167 batting average... Christina Chavez of Cal State Dominguez Hills help pace the Toros to a 4-0 week by hitting .636 with three home runs and 15 RBIs.
